Think of the Azores … now think of Trail … join the two and we have the best of two worlds, the Azores Trail Run®, which takes place on the island of Faial, on the 27th of May. Although the inscriptions are already closed, unfortunately this year I still would not be able to participate, but in 2018 I do not want to miss!
The 2017 edition of the Azores Trail Run will be marked by the first Trail Ultra XL of the Azores. The Great Whalers’ Route travels 126 km along the trails of Faial, in honor of the whaler cultural heritage of Faial Island.
With the starting line in the port of Salão and the finish line in Capelinhos, next to the old whaling port of Comprido, the Great Route of the Whalers will have this year its inaugural edition, that is destined only to invited athletes. “This year we test this new course, carefully set up on the island of Faial, which aims to show the harmonious tourism product that can be built, combining Tourism, Sport, Nature and Culture around a single activity,” explains Mário Leal, Director of the Azores Trail Run®.
The 700 registered athletes are distributed by the various events that make up the event, the most requested being the “10 Volcano Trail” – a half marathon that departs from the Caldeira to Capelinhos Volcano and will have its 6th edition in 2017 – And “Faial Costa a Costa” – a marathon that is held this year for the fourth time, with departure from the parish of Ribeirinha and finishes at Vulcão.
Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and Luxembourg are some of the countries most represented in this edition of the Azores Trail Run®, with registrations from countries such as South Africa, Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile , United States, Greece, Greenland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Netherlands, Serbia and Switzerland.
Also worthy of note is the “Endurance Blue Island Trail”, a 70 km race that in 2016 had its first edition, departing from the emblematic Forte de São Sebastião and final destination to Vulcão dos Capelinhos, and for the debut of “Trilho das Baías” That leaves simultaneously with the Endurance and travels 25 km until the finish line, in the parish of Ribeirinha.
In 2017 will also be held the second edition of the Vertical Km of Pico Island, which will be held on May 26, the day before the events held in Faial. For this race are registered about 60 athletes. It is recalled that the first edition of Km Vertical of the island of Pico happened in 2016 and was won by the Austrian Andreas Tomann.
The Family Trail, which has its second edition on a 10-kilometer course that ends at Vulcão dos Capelinhos, aims to give the opportunity to participate in walking or running to a greater number of people at the great trail running party that happens at Faial, opening it not only to more experienced athletes, but to all people.
In addition to including the official circuits of the Portuguese Trail Running Association in 2017, the Azores Trail Run® races allow, as usual, to score for the Mont Blanc Ultra Trail.
The Azores Trail Run takes place in the Natural Park of Faial, collector of the EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) awards, having in 2016 this prize in the category “Experience in Nature”.
The Azores Trail Run® is organized by Clube Independente de Atletismo Ilha Azul and has the support of the Regional Government of the Azores.
