Pensem nos Açores… agora pensem em Trail… juntem os dois e temos o melhor de dois mundos, o Azores Trail Run®, que se realiza na ilha do Faial, já no próximo dia 27 de maio. Apesar das inscrições já se encontrarem fechadas, infelizmente este ano ainda não estaria em condições de participar, mas em 2018 não quero faltar!
A edição de 2017 do Azores Trail Run ficará marcada pela realização do primeiro Trail Ultra XL dos Açores. A Grande Rota dos Baleeiros percorre 126 km pelos trilhos faialenses, numa homenagem ao património cultural baleeiro da ilha do Faial.
Com a linha de partida no porto do Salão e a meta nos Capelinhos, junto ao antigo porto baleeiro do Comprido, a Grande Rota dos Baleeiros terá este ano a sua edição inaugural, que se destina apenas a atletas convidados. “Este ano fazemos um teste a este novo percurso, cuidadosamente montado na ilha do Faial, que ambiciona mostrar o produto turístico harmonioso que é possível construir, conjugando Turismo, Desporto, Natureza e Cultura em torno de uma única atividade”, explica Mário Leal, diretor do Azores Trail Run®.
Os 700 atletas inscritos estão distribuídos pelas várias provas que compõem o evento, sendo as mais requisitadas o “Trilho dos 10 Vulcões” – meia maratona que parte da Caldeira com destino ao Vulcão dos Capelinhos e que terá em 2017 a sua 6.ª edição – e o “Faial Costa a Costa” – maratona que se realiza este ano pela quarta vez, com partida da freguesia da Ribeirinha e meta no Vulcão.
Alemanha, Espanha, França, Reino Unido e Luxemburgo são alguns dos países mais representados nesta edição do Azores Trail Run®, sendo que também se registaram inscrições de países como África do Sul, Andorra, Argentina, Áustria, Bélgica, Brasil, Canadá, Chile, Estados Unidos, Grécia, Gronelândia, Itália, Letónia, Noruega, Holanda, Sérvia e Suíça.
Destaque também para o “Endurance Trail Ilha Azul”, prova de 70 km que em 2016 teve a sua primeira edição, com partida do emblemático Forte de São Sebastião e destino ao Vulcão dos Capelinhos, e para a estreia do “Trilho das Baías”, que parte em simultâneo com o Endurance e percorre 25 km até à meta, na freguesia da Ribeirinha.
Em 2017 decorrerá também a segunda edição do Km Vertical da Ilha do Pico, prova que decorrerá a 26 de maio, um dia antes das provas realizadas no Faial. Para esta prova estão inscritos cerca de 60 atletas. Recorde-se que a primeira edição do Km Vertical da ilha do Pico aconteceu em 2016 e foi ganha pelo austríaco Andreas Tomann.
A estas provas junta-se o Family Trail, que conta com a sua segunda edição, num percurso de 10 km que termina na meta do Vulcão dos Capelinhos e tem por objetivo dar oportunidade de participar, a andar ou a correr, a um maior número de pessoas na grande festa do trail running que acontece nessa altura no Faial, abrindo-a não apenas aos atletas mais experientes, mas a todas as pessoas.
Para além de incluir os circuitos oficiais da Associação de Trail Running de Portugal em 2017, as provas do Azores Trail Run® permitem, como já vem sendo habitual, pontuar para o Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc.
O Azores Trail Run decorre em pleno Parque Natural do Faial, colecionador de galardões EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence), tendo em 2016 arrecadado este prémio na categoria “Experiência na Natureza”.
O Azores Trail Run® é organizado pelo Clube Independente de Atletismo Ilha Azul, e conta com o apoio do Governo Regional dos Açores. Trata-se, atualmente, do mais expressivo evento de desporto de natureza realizado no arquipélago, e continua a despertar o interesse de muitos atletas de todo o planeta, indo desta forma ao encontro das aspirações da Região para o setor do Turismo, que passam pela exploração sustentável da natureza intacta dos Açores.

The 2017 edition of the Azores Trail Run will be marked by the first Trail Ultra XL of the Azores. The Great Whalers’ Route travels 126 km along the trails of Faial, in honor of the whaler cultural heritage of Faial Island.
With the starting line in the port of Salão and the finish line in Capelinhos, next to the old whaling port of Comprido, the Great Route of the Whalers will have this year its inaugural edition, that is destined only to invited athletes. “This year we test this new course, carefully set up on the island of Faial, which aims to show the harmonious tourism product that can be built, combining Tourism, Sport, Nature and Culture around a single activity,” explains Mário Leal, Director of the Azores Trail Run®.
The 700 registered athletes are distributed by the various events that make up the event, the most requested being the “10 Volcano Trail” – a half marathon that departs from the Caldeira to Capelinhos Volcano and will have its 6th edition in 2017 – And “Faial Costa a Costa” – a marathon that is held this year for the fourth time, with departure from the parish of Ribeirinha and finishes at Vulcão.
Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and Luxembourg are some of the countries most represented in this edition of the Azores Trail Run®, with registrations from countries such as South Africa, Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile , United States, Greece, Greenland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Netherlands, Serbia and Switzerland.
Also worthy of note is the “Endurance Blue Island Trail”, a 70 km race that in 2016 had its first edition, departing from the emblematic Forte de São Sebastião and final destination to Vulcão dos Capelinhos, and for the debut of “Trilho das Baías” That leaves simultaneously with the Endurance and travels 25 km until the finish line, in the parish of Ribeirinha.
