Today, April 19th, it’s my birthday !!! So far nothing new. What I was completely unaware of is that World Bicycle Day is celebrated on this day. How come I did not know this!!!
World Bicycle Day owes its celebration to a scientific experience. That’s right, it has nothing to do with the creation of the bike or any other velociped event!
Chemist Albert Hofmann (1906-2008) was a Swiss scientist best known for being the first to synthesize, ingeste and understand the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide, known worldwide as LSD. On April 19, 1943, the chemist performed a self-experiment to determine the true effects of LSD and intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of the substance, an amount he predicted would be a limiting dose (for comparison, today a real limiting dose is Of 20 micrograms).
Less than an hour later, Hofmann experienced sudden and intense changes in perception. Fearing that if he had poisoned, he asked his laboratory assistant to accompany him to his house. The use of vehicles was prohibited due to World War II restrictions and made the trip by bicycle.
On the trip, the scientist’s condition deteriorated rapidly as he struggled with feelings of anxiety, alternately believing that the neighbor on the side was a malevolent witch and that he was going mad. Shortly after arriving home, Hofmann was visited by a doctor. The patient did not detect any physical anomaly in the patient, except the extremely dilated eyes. Since then, April 19 is celebrated as World Bicycle Day and this indeed deserves to be celebrated!
Therefore today is the World Bicycle Day and also my birthday … To mark these two dates, we have a bottle of Cabeça de Toiro Reserva by theREDproject to offer. Say it is not beautiful!!!
