O conceito GFNY (Gran Fondo New York) começou oficialmente em 2010, através de Lidia e Uli Fluhme mas as suas raizes remontam ao ano de 1995, quando Uli Fluhme, com apenas 20 anos, participa no seu primeiro granfondo na Austria e fica completamente viciado neste novo conceito.
A vida ciclista em Nova Iorque, até ao momento era rica em criteriums, circuitos e tours, mas faltava algo como um gran fondo, onde amadores e profissionais poderiam competir lado a lado, em estradas fechadas ou policiadas, com uma classificação e a merecida medalha de finisher. Para tornar este evento memorável, Lidia decidiu que a partida teria de ser igualmente memorável e assim surgiu a ideia da ponte George Washington, uma ponte que liga Manhattan a New Jersey. Depois de muitas negas e muita insistência, finalmente conseguiram a saída memorável para o GFNY.
8 de Maio de 2011, a data para o primeiro GFNY. Alinharam à partida 1900 ciclistas, o objectivo para cobrir os custos da prova eram os 2000, mesmo assim Lidia e Uli sabiam que estavam no caminho certo e no dia 8 de Maio, 1900 ciclistas tomaram a decisão de se tornarem profissionais por um dia, (Be a Pro for a Day) o mote do GFNY.
Em 2014 foi o ano da internacionalização do evento com o primeiro GFNY Itália e com a respectiva globalização. Seguiu-se a ilha de Cozumel no Mexico e Colombia. O GFNY estava em três continentes, America do Norte, America do Sul e Europa.
A marca GFNY estava estabelecida e continuou a sua globalização tornando-se a GFNY Global Cycling Marathon Series, com 5 campeonatos regionais e o campeonato mundial em Nova Iorque.
2018 foi o ano da estreia do GFNY Portugal, pelas mãos de Ana Paula Cavalcanti, advogada, empresária e ciclista amadora, apaixonada por Portugal. Cascais foi a cidade escolhida para acolher o Campeonato Europeu do GFNY, que após o sucesso da primeira edição vê assim renovada a parceria para 2019.
Por todas estas razões, o ano de 2019 vai ser o ano da nossa estreia no GFNY Portugal e esperamos não ficar por aqui. Ansiosos por abraçar o espírito do GFNY e Be a Pro for a Day, no dia 8 de Setembro de 2019 lá estaremos na linha de partida.

The GFNY (Gran Fondo New York) concept officially began in 2010 through Lidia and Uli Fluhme but its roots date back to 1995, when Uli Fluhme, just 20 years old, participates in his first granfondo in Austria and gets completely addicted in this new concept.
Only in 2010 Lidia and Uli, together participated in an “authentic Italian Grand Fondo”, a 141km event, on roads closed to traffic and where Lidia, multiple finisher of Ironman Hawaii, was forced to dismount in one of the harsh climbs. All this atmosphere of festivity and competition vitiated Lydia and she decided she had to bring this idea to New York City.
Cyclist life in New York, until now was rich in criterium circuits and tours, but it lacked something like a gran fondo, where amateurs and professionals could compete side by side, on closed roads or policed, with a classification and a deserved finisher medal. To make this event memorable, Lidia decided that the event departure would have to be equally memorable, and so the idea of the George Washington Bridge, a bridge linking Manhattan to New Jersey, came up. After many denials and a lot of insistence, she finally got the GFNY memorable departure.
May 8, 2011, the date for the first GFNY, 1900 cyclists were at the start line, they needed 2000 to cover the costs of the event. Lidia and Uli knew they were on the right track, and on May 8, 1900 cyclists made the decision to become professionals for one day, ( Be a Pro for a Day) the motto of the GFNY.

For all these reasons, the year 2019 will be the year of our debut at GFNY Portugal and we hope not to stop here. Looking forward to embracing the spirit of GFNY and Be a Pro for a Day, on September 8, 2019 we will be at the starting line.
