O ciclista Rui Costa, campeão do mundo de estrada em 2013 e actual campeão nacional, voltou a fazer história no ciclismo mundial com o seu terceiro lugar na clássica Liège-Bastogne-Liège, um dos cinco Monumentos, Milão-Sanremo, Volta à Flandres, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège e Lombardia!
No início da época em entrevista a Gonçalo Amorim do Eurosport, Rui Costa diz “A Liège é a rainha, há qualquer coisa que me leva a querer ganhá-la mais do que qualquer outra. Será a minha terceira participação e sei que é difícil, mas é um sonho. Vou sempre com a ideia de aprender, mas se houver oportunidade tento ganhar”.
Mesmo para quem não percebe ou não acompanha o ciclismo, o nome Rui Costa já vai sendo reconhecido, infelizmente é além fronteiras que este é mais valorizado. Foi através da televisão que suámos as suas múltiplas vitórias em etapas do Tour de France, a segunda maior prova desportiva do mundo, logo atrás do campeonato do mundo de futebol, vitórias essas que nos fizeram sonhar com uma subida portuguesa ao mais alto lugar do pódio em uma das três grandes Voltas.
Infelizmente e apesar da vitória de Rui Costa nos campeonatos do mundo de estrada em 2013, esse objectivo não foi realizado e pensa-se que actualmente a preparação do português já não passa por vencer uma prova de três semanas.
É quase seguro dizer que com a alteração de foco na preparação do ciclista, não será de todo descabido pensar em uma vitória portuguesa numa das clássicas!

It is almost safe to say that with the focus change in the rider preparation, t’s not unreasonable to think about a Portuguese victory in a classic!
